When undertaking a railing project, keeping the safety of family, friends, and others in mind is a responsible and ethical choice that benefits all users as well as the property owner. ADA compliance protects everyone while enjoying your deck or porch, or using your property's stairs and walkways.

Whether for a residential or commercial property, by meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act recommendations, you can assist those with disabilities and every user with railings they can navigate safely and comfortably while reducing the risk of accidents, injuries, and liability.

ADA Handrail Requirements

ADA-compliant railing systems have several requirements, including:

  • A handrail height between 34 inches and 38 inches above the surface of the stair tread, ramp, or decking
  • Ability of the handrail to be grasped with one hand, with a diameter of at least 1 1/4 inches and no more than 2 inches or a perimeter dimension of at least 4 inches and no more than 6 1/4 inches
  • Space between the handrail and the wall, or surface next to it, of at least 1 1/2 inches
  • Continuous handrails for the full length of the stairs, parallel to the stairway

For functional and user-friendly railings for all, check out the brands below offering ADA-compliant secondary handrail systems and components—and start enjoying your safety-conscious space with no building code delays.
