How does PostShield lengthen the life of a post?
The patent-pending design of the PostShield allows the post to "breathe". Specially designed ribs on the interior surfaces, the ones that come into contact with the wood 4x4, allow moisture to evaporate away from the post. Posts in contact with concrete, or dirt, are exposed to leaching from those materials which stay in contact with the post and cause mildew, rot, or worse. PostShield protects the post and its density has been designed to allow it to expand and contract with the post, through out yearly weather cycles.
Why is it easier to install a post using PostShield?
Unlike normal installation you insert only the post shield into the concrete not the entire post. Since holes are rarely dug EXACTLY the same depth this will no longer be a problem with PostShield. You then level the PostShield, not a top heavy post that is hard to handle. When the concrete sets, you place your post in the PostShield and measure for the correct height. You can then pull the post out of the PostShield and cut it on a saw horse instead of being unsteady and unsafe on a ladder with your saw. You simply reinsert the post and secure it with screws and you are done. It's faster, cheaper ( time is money ), and SAFER.
Why do I need to leave 4 inches of the PostShield above grade?
Other than the obvious improved aesthetic appearance it gives the post, evaporation of moisture which will be more efficient. It is easier to install and remove the set screws locking the post. The four inch protection will shield the post from weed whacker damage, mower chips, etc. A weed whacker against a post on a dew filled morning can do a lot of damage to a fence.
Are PostShields available in other sizes?
Initially the PostShield is being manufactured for 4x4 wood applications. The patent filed covers other sizes, but those are not available at this time.
How long will the life of my post be extended?
Many factors will affect the useful life of the post. The type of wood used, the use of the deck or fence, your climate, etc. are all factors. Cattle ranchers might have a post broken the day it's installed. Traffic signs may be run over, but whatever the usage, weather, type of wood (redwood, cedar, pine, pressure treated, etc.) the ultimate replacement or repair will be easier, cheaper, and safer.
Can I re-use my PostShield?
PostShield can be removed from the ground without destroying it by removing the post, fill the PostShield with ice on a moderately warm day, wait approximately 20 minutes, and pull the PostShield out of the ground ( the concrete will stay in the ground, of course). The PostShield PVC with UV protection can then be used in another location.
